Fucking Sand

March 14th, 2007

So what are we, 5 days into an apparent change in season? Two weeks ago, it was backcountry in the IB and now, it’s time to hit the trails. I fixed up the shifterBike a couple of days ago. I had been running Stan’s for about 6 months or so, whether I was riding it or not, and I was loving it… loving it so much that I dropped the psi down to a plush 35 from 40 and the next thing I know, I started flat-spotting and cracking all the wheels I have.

Now I’m back on tubes. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. My shit just feels clapped out now like beverly hill billy. Stan’s works so good, that now the rims break instead of the tubes. Good times.

Yesterday I rolled clumpy McRims out for a couple hours around fisher point. It was a kind ride.

What had happened was: due to there not being any precip this year, my first ride of 07 in the northland included sections of stucco mud and otherwise midsummer dryness everywhere other than the northside shade. That wasn’t really all that bad. I took a little saftey break, checked the headset and all that at the entrance to Walnut Cyn at Fisher point. That place is hooKooCaCho. Not lame like Fisher, but cool like Beatles. After that, I climbeed up onto the point and headed into town via the roads up there. I never know where I am when I get on those roads up on da mesa because I figure I don’t really need to. But then it happened. I got lost.

The FS roads that are usually hardpack jelly roll were essentially sand pits to my surprise.

Keep on swimming.

Apparently, the rain & snow was missed by the dirt on those roads, because it was disbanding and leavng sand there to do nothing other than be spineless. The cryptobiotic soil on the edges of the roads kept the sand in check, but it was wierd. Like a ledge on each side of a sand-drag strip. Fuck’n a.

I made it out of that place of course. No, not really lost but I certainly felt like I had already be on that road about two times. Then it dumped me out into that perfect little sub division. Yea, that one.

Phoenix is going to be scortched this summer. Tucson too. I feel for my brothers & sisters in those places… and my fam too. SoCal is already on a record breaking heat up. This summer should be a tuff one.
