Snow report

January 21st, 2007

“…It’s unfortunate, but we need to wait for another good storm, hopefully the next will be very wet, until we can further evaluate the conditions…”
On MiLK Day, which was last Monday, Troy, Pularski, Art and self hopped FS164 up to pipeline and over to snowbowl rd. We pop onto the road about a mile uphill from the closed gate, which is managed by the Forest Service, although Snowbowl employees come and go throughout the day. The entire area- the resort the road and the adjacent forest, is national forest, aka; public land. This should mean the public has a right to be there. Snowbowl itself, is on long term lease from the FS.

We parked at the resort and hiked to the top of the runs. Contrary to Snowbowls cry, the place is ridable as this youtube vid I cought of the Future on his way down, suggests. Sure, chappy in spots, powwy in others, but this is flagstaff and what we’ve got here, is a ghetto. About half way up the hill, at least one snow bowl employee gave us shit for hiking up. He said something to the effect that we had driven over wilderness boundaries. Then he took off on his snowmobile to make a phone call.

When we got to the bottom after an earned run, The Green Fuzz was waiting with warmed pen tip. The fine was 200 dollars for two violations; driving on a closed FS road, and accessing another closed FS road. No signs were established. And no gates were closed anywhere along our route. Yet Smokey was all about his authority.

Last I checked, we didn’t create Snowbowls geographical poverty. The place is ghetto and it always will be. That is a fact that it seems they cannot accept. I guess that’s why they cry like little girls.

That is bulldhit…. The first pair of skins I bought was there in flag at aspen sports for the sole reason of skiing up the mountain when it was closed.. As far as I know the land is forest service. The only rule here in breck about up skiing is not to go where th eski patatrol might be doing avy work… Don’t give up the fight time to go and ski the north stuff bear jaw and abanaugh..

No way!! You’d think that after all these years of snowshoeing up the damn hill and back down (in plain sight of the employees) that some sort of “deal” was to be had…
